Stay on trend & support the world we live in with local vintage & ethical fashion buys
How often does the question of ethics come into your morning routine of getting dressed? It seems increasingly so, as vintage and ethical styles feature heavily in spring’s fashions. Plus, the vintage/eco-friendly option is ‘very Brighton’, meaning it’s never hard to find some great buys right on your doorstep.
So why choose vintage? Aside from getting an item that’s individual (a must for parties/weddings!), vintage clothing is a great investment – plus, it’s eco-friendly too. Recycling and re-using vintage clothing discourages the production of ‘throw-away fashion’. The result? It’s better for the environment.
We are becoming more aware as consumers on ‘value’ fashion, thinking twice about a ‘bargain’. It’s that question of ethics again: surely we all want a quality item that’s been made in fair working conditions? Fair-trade fashion is on the increase as a result. And then there’s the materials to consider too: organic cotton, environmentally-friendly fibres (with no harsh chemicals used in the production process) and sustainable sources are all sought after.
Here, we round up the best in local shopping that keeps ethics in mind, with some great vintage buys, and eco-friendly fashion and beauty products. Bamboo features heavily, but don’t worry – there’s plenty left for the Panda Bears!
Frock Me
The world of vintage fashion has seen an explosion of interest. Last year saw the relocation of Frock Me vintage fashion fair to the Corn Exchange to accommodate the increase in demand. Indeed, Brighton has become a magnet for all things vintage, so much so that Frock Me will shortly be opening the Blackbird Tea Rooms – a traditional 1940s tea shop in Ship Street, which, with its original old shop fittings and staff all dressed in vintage, will be the perfect setting for vintage lovers to see and be seen.
